In The Hague, The Netherlands, at the Royal Conservatory, from the 30th of October until the 1st November, the first IASJ Jazz Conference took place. About 80 participants from various organizations and institutions attended keynotes, lectures, presentations as well as contributed to deep and lively discussions.
The 1st IASJ Jazz Education Conference 2003 was a landmark, a historical event, the first one of its kind in Europe. The bachelor and master programs at academies, conservatories were in the make but not yet implemented. Universities in Europe sometimes offered studies in musicology, in which jazz was almost completely absent. Jazz research was still at its infancy, trying to carve out a path of its own, getting away from the constraints of scientific musicological research.
A small booklet containing the report of the conference is distributed world-wide. If you want a 'collector's item' copy, please contact the IASJ Service Bureau. You can find direct access to the report here below. A link to the report in a new window from which you can download the PDF of the report is offered to you by clicking on The Link to the 2003 IASJ Jazz Education Conference.
